“Q: Tell me about GRACE OR THE ART OF CLIMBING. How do you feel rehearsals are going? What do you love most about the show?
A: It is a beautiful, soaring play about a woman named Emm who learns to rock climb. It's about grief, and also healing....being a friend, being a partner, being a parent, and being alone....being stuck, inside our minds and inside our bodies....and also strength and the power each of us holds inside ourselves and protects. I love this play so so much, and I feel grateful everyday in the rehearsal room to be immersed in it. One unique aspect to this process is that we are partnering with The Gravity Vault Rock Climbing Gym in Hoboken where they have not only been generously donating elements of our scenic design such as ropes and holds. But they have welcomed myself, the actors, and the designers into their gym where we have received one-on-one coaching as well as opportunities to spend hours exploring and climbing in the gym. The coaches and guides at the gym have shared with us their own experiences and journeys through climbing, and they have helped us to learn about the community. Two coaches, Lucas and Caitlin, joined us in the performance space this week to work with myself and the actors to look deeper at how we are staging the climbing sequences in the play so that we might find more specificity to how we are cracking open the physical life of the storytelling.” (Zack Calhoon, read the full interview here)
